The Mind's Labyrinth

A frost numbs the pain / The flowers in the rain / A shade of deep blue / Secrets hide inside you - StarClan's Most Recent Prophecy

/ Preface /[]

The deceased felines of StarClan gathered round the pool of stars, the one way to gaze down upon the clans. It was silent, save the soft, silky whisper of wind brushing through their fur.

Ocherfur was the first to speak, padding forward to adress the crowd. "It has been enough time," He began, clearing his throat, "And we have decided to reward the clans with another prophecy."

A ripple of unhappy murmurs chorused through the gathered felines. "Why?" One asked. "They've been through so much!" Added another. Ochrefur shook his head. "You see, cats of StarClan... this is the last one. Ever."

"What do you mean?!" It was the first one again. Ochrefur smiled slightly. "Exactly what I said. This is the last one. If the clans survive, they'll have no need for StarClan, or prophecies." "And if they fail?" It was Darlingheart, one of the first kittypets-turned-warriors in the clan.

A slow smile spread over Ochrefur's face, and his eyes lit up with what seemed to be cruel excitement, a ravaging energy that made his own pelt bristle. "Well," He purred smoothly. "If they fail, there won't be any clans to prophecize about, now, is there?"

/ Chapter One /[]

Whitepaw's eyes shone as she gazed up at Treestar, their leader - her leader. In a few moments, she and her sister, Sweetpaw, would be warriors. Warriors! Finally! After seven moons of tedious training, she had done it! She had passed!

A grin lit up her radiant features as she fantasized about her name. Whitesong? Whitedapple? Whitecall? Whitebird? There were so many possibilities, and she was certain that her name would be wonderful. "Excited, dear?" It was Ripplewhisker, their mother.

She nodded. "Yes!" She chirped. "I can't wait!" Sweetpaw, her sister, nodded, her tail flicking eagerly. "I hope it starts soon!" As if on cue, Treestar opened his mouth and called the summons. "Cats of RiverClan, gather around the Reedrock for a clan meeting!"

Sleek-furred felines poured out of the surrounding dens, and Whitepaw felt a bubble of pride in her chest. Finally! It was happening! She had done it! She would be a warrior-

"I, Treestar, leader of RiverClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn.

"Sweetpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" He asked, peering down at Whitepaw's silver tabby sister.

"I do, Treestar!" Sweetpaw said eagerly, her blue eyes shining. Whitepaw felt a twinge of regret. How come Sweetpaw got to go first? She let out a small breath of disappointment - not fair!

"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Sweetpaw, from this moment you will be known as Sweetfrost. StarClan honors your initiative and energy, and we welcome you as a full warrior of RiverClan." Treestar announced.

"Whitepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" He asked, repeating the question that he had asked Sweetpaw.

"I do!" She replied excitedly, gazing up at him.

"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Whitepaw, from this moment you will be known as Whiterose. StarClan honors your resilliance and strategy, and we welcome you as a full warrior of RiverClan." Treestar announced.

"Sweetfrost! Whiterose! Sweetfrost! Whiterose! Sweetfrost! Whiterose!" The clan chanted. Sweetfrost and Whiterose exchanged an elated look - it was done. They had completed their education. They were complete warriors of RiverClan.
