Story

Chapter 1 - The Ceremony

Iceclaw got up from Moonpool and looked around. The Moonpool was still as cold and dark as when he first arrived to recieve his nine lives from StarClan. He couldn't understand, how could this be the dream his medicine cat, Lnyxfur, had promised him, for there was nothing here. Suddenly a shape emerged from the path leading to Moonpool, it's gray fur shining and blue eyes glowing as it walked down the path toward Iceclaw.

"I am Star, leader of StarClan," the tabby tom's voice rang out over Moonpool.

"Leader of StarClan?" Iceclaw whispered back, "but StarClan doesn't have a leader, and where are all the other cats who will give me my nine lives, and you look like a cat from a nursery story named-."

"Silence," he snapped back, "My name is Star, and I alone will give you your nine lives."

He walked toward Iceclaw and put his nose on Iceclaws head and said, "You will now be known as Icestar, and so I give you your nine lives. Use them well."

He turned away to leave, only to see another cat going down the path toward them, an unhappy look in her amber eyes.

"Bronzespots, what are you doing here?" Star asked in an angry tone.

Icestar looked up. Bronzspots was Thornstar's deputy before him. She walked into the starlight and Icestar reconized her gray and brown fur, which was littered with bronze colored spots.

"Hello," she said to Star in an unhappy tone, "May I give Icestar one of his nine lives."

"No!" Star snapped back, "So you should leave now."

Bronzespots glanced back at Icestar for a final time before leaving up the path. Star glared at Icestar and said, "I am the leader of StarClan. Do not tell anyone and do not make me your enemy." With that, Star left and the dream vanished into the mist.

Chapter 2 - The Return

Icestar got up from Moonpool in a state of shock. StarClan actually had a leader, a mean leader. He faintly saw Lynxfur walk up to him and say, "What happened? You seem to be shocked. Did you get your nine lives?"

"Yes," Icestar whispered back, "I did. I'm just so shocked that I'm leader now. I never thought it would happen to me," he lied.

"It's all right," Lynxfur said comfortably, "Let's head back to camp."

They continued walking through the trees and rough terrian. They were just a little bit away from camp when they heard a rustle in the bushes. They disregarded it tiredly. A second later a gray cat with dark streaks in it's pelt leaped out of the bushes and landed on Icestar.

"Gotcha," a voice said. Icestar twisted around and saw the fimiliar face of Meltingpaw. He had always been freindly with Meltingpaw since Meltingpaw had stumbled across the clans from across the mountains.

"Meltingpaw, you shouldn't suprise me like that. I'm tired since my journey to Moonpool."

"Fine, I'll let you rest for a while."

That was Meltingpaw. Always worrying about him, like he was on some sort of mission. Icestar walked into the camp and saw Swiftfur leading out the dawn patrol and his loyal freind, Birchpelt, waiting for him outside Icestar's den. Everything seemed normal. He hoped it stayed that way.

Bronzespots walked into the meeting place. It was an undergroung series of tunnels that connected ThunderClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan. Another StarClan member named Wolfclaw got up to greet her.

"Bronzespots, your late. I thought you might have been caught."

"I know. I wanted to see if I could give Icestar one of his nine lives."

"You know Star won't let you do that. He's changed all the rules around here."

"I know, but -."

A shape stumbled through the darkness toward them. Bronzespots and Wolfclaw jumped up at the sound, only to see that it was Flamestorm. Flamestorm got back up, only to fall down again.

"They're coming," he said, his voice quivering, "Star's coming. Hawkfrost followed you, and now they're both coming to get you."

"Run! Bronzespots, you take Flamestrom in the tunnels to ShadowClan territory. I'll go to WindClan territory," Wolfclaw ordered, "Now go."

They ran out into the tunnels and escaped just as Hawkfrost and Star came in.

"They escaped," Hawkfrost said angerly.

"They can't run away forever. I sense a rebellion growing. One day they will face us, and they will lose."

Chapter 3 - The Battle

Star glanced across the feild at the rebel cats who had agreed to fight him in these feilds. He knew they would lose.

"I don't understand why they want to fight. We must outnumber them four to one," Hawkfrost reasoned.

"Leave it alone," Tigerstar snapped back, "If they face us, they will lose, and there will be no rebels."

"Be quiet," Star ordered them, "They're coming to attack."

The rebel cats stalked forward until they were only several tail lengths away, then leaped at the StarClan cats that surronded Star. They fought as good as they could, but were outnumbered four to one and were defeated.

"I still don't understandwhy they chose to fight us," Hawkfrost repeated as the rebel cats fled.

"I thought I told you to leave it alone," Tigerstar snapped at him.

"They don't realize that even StarClan members can die," Star explained, "but I do, because I have."

They waited in silence for a few moments, watching the rebel cats flee over the hills and into the forest, with the shadow of the far away mountains visible in the distance.

"They're going to the mountains," Hawkfrost observed.

"Then we will go there to," Star responded, "Get our cats ready to travel by the sunhigh after next."

Icestar was on a hunting patrol with his apprentice, Meltingpaw. Meltingpaw was an excelllent fighter and a great hunter, but he was often to quick to act. He had just chased a mouse, and probally wouldn't even catch it. Then Meltingpaw came out of the bracken with a mouse in it's teath, proving him wrong.

"Is my hunting doing well?" Meltingpaw asked.

"Yes," Icestar told him, "It would be better if you didn't run off like that, but it's still good. Now bury the mouse and let's head toward the tunnels."

Meltingpaw quickly buried the mouse and headed with Icestar toward the tunnels. The tunnels connected ThunderClan, ShadowClan, and WindClan. They had been sealed during the days of Firestar, but had recently been reopened by an earthquake. As they neared the tunnels, they scented vole and froze. Meltingpaw stalked forward and caught the vole, just as Icestar scented another scent through the trees.

"Meltingpaw, wait," he said, too late.

Meltingpaw was pounced on by a flame colored rogue, who aimed his teath at Meltingpaw's neck. Icestar dove at the rogue and knocked him off Meltingpaw. The rogue pushed Icestar away, then dove at Icestar with his claws extended, which were armored with dog's teath. His claws extended into Icestar's throut, crippling him. Icestar lived long enough to see his deputy, Birchpelt, arrive and help Meltinpaw push the rogue into the tunnels before he died and his vision fell into the mist.

Icestar woke up at Moonpool. He looked around, but only saw Star and a shadowy silver outline next to him.

"You have lost your first live," Star told him, "You shouldn't - what was that?"

A misty cloud came up from Moonpool and surronded them, and with a bright flash, the mist and Star were gone.

Icestar looked at his new and unfimiliar surrondings. In front of him was a shining rock in the same tunnel he was in, and next to it was Bronzespots.

"Listen closely to what I have to say, Icestar," Bronzespots said to him in an mysterious tone, "You must travel across the mountains and raise an army to help us defeat Star. Go to Twolegplace and find the Loner's descedents, as well as the Lost Ones. You must bring them here, then our worlds will come together and we can defeat Star. Then we will be free."

"But where are we."

"When you have raised an army, you will find it easily enough. I promise you. You may leave now."

The mist came from the rock this time, surronding them, and with another blinding flash, Icestar's world disolved into nothingness.

Chapter 4 - The Journey

Icestar looked across the Clan territories he had just passed through. He saw the hills of WindClan and beyond that, the forest of ThunderClan, so he knew he had a long way to go.

Icestar had recovered from losing his first life two days ago. He didn't tell anyone his reason for leaving, not even his deputy, Birchpelt, who he had left in charge, but told them that StarClan sent him away. Meltingpaw had a new mentor while Icestar was gone, who was Swiftfur. Just thinking of Meltingpaw brought him to realize that he could scent Meltingpaw near him.

"Meltingpaw," Icestar said, hoping there would be no response.

Icestar stared, with no suprise, at Meltingpaw, who had just walked out of the trees beside Icestar.

"Meltingpaw, what are you doing here?" Icestar asked, "You're supposed to be at camp with Swiftfur."

"It's fine, Swiftfur and Birchpelt said I could go. Also, I know you're going to fight Star," he said through Icestar's shocked gasp, "It's alright, I didn't tell anyone."

"Is it any use telling you to leave or asking you how you knew that?"

"I will tell you everything later, but I will not leave."

"Fine, you can come," Icestar said while Meltingpaw gave an excited meow.

"Yes! Let's get going," Meltingpaw said as they both set off through the forest and toward the mountains together.

Chapter 5 - The Mountains

Star stalked into the cave with his StarClan cats right behind him, and Tigerstar at his side. Dark, muddy cats from around the cave got up and formed a defensive line at the other side of the cave. A small, brown cat came up from behind the line and approached Star and his warriors.

"Star, what are you doing here? This is the Tribe of Endless Hunting's territory," the cat spat at Star boldly.

"Well, Stoneteller. You appear to be recovering from our last... meating," Star responded.

"We'll never forget that."

"I hope not. Anyway I believe you know why I am here. I am looking for some rogue cats who fled into this area. Do you know where they are?"

They stayed here for a sunrise before they continued on to the Tribe of Endless Fire's territory," Stoneteller said, a note of despair in his voice.

"They must have thought they could stand a better chance with a more war-like tribe," Star whispered to himself.

"We can still fight," Stoneteller said, the cats behind him yowling in agreement.

"You can still lose, too. Remind me, didn't you say that you sheltered my enemies for a sunrise."

"Yes, but they were injured, and it was only for a sunrise."

"Still, you sheltered my enemies. I don't like that."

Noting the mean threat in Star's voice, Stoneteller yelled, " Rock, get the Tribe toward the Tribe of Endless Fire's territory!"

Star leaped at Stoneteller and knocked him to the ground. Knowing he couldn't win, Stoneteller tried to distract the Clan cats by fleeing into another cave. The clan cats began to follow him, but were ordered back by Star. That was enough, though, and and Rock plus many others escaped out of the caves. Star chased after Stoneteller until they were both in the Cave of Pointed Stones. The pool in the middle of the cave shone brightly, images of fallen leaves and a huge mountain lion appearing on it. Star and Stoneteller circled each other, then, to Star's suprise, Stoneteller reconized defeat and fled into the tunnels, becoming lost forever.

Star turned back to the pool and saw a flame colored cat sitting in a harsh, far away twolegplace.

Icestar stared up at the rocky mountains, their peaks covered by the clouds. He was at the bottom of one of the mountains with Meltingpaw when his apprentice spoke, "Wow, that's a long way up."

"You've been here before, though."

"Yes, I have, and it's still a wonderous site. I'll lead. I probally know these mountains better than you."

So they started to go up the mountains with Meltingpaw in the lead when a wolf's yowl rang out over the landscape.

"Wolfs," Meltingpaw said nervosly, "Quick, we've got to get high enough up these mountains so that they can't catch us."

They kept going at a new, more accelerated pace up the mountains to escape the wolf's reach. They countinued to travel up the mountain until the wolfs could not be heard. Icestar and Meltingpaw then agreed on resting for a while before going on to find a place to sleep. While they were resting a eerie silence fell over the mountains. Suddenly a large shadow fell over them, then vanished as if it had never been there.

"Sharptooth," Meltingpaw whispered to himself, his voice quivering with fear.

"What?" Icestar asked, not understanding him.

"We've got to go. Now," Meltingpaw told him, his voice revealing the panic inside him.

They dashed up the mountain in a desprate attempt to get through it. They kept going through the night, until dawn. In that time they had gone through a valley, and were now in a place where there were only two ways out, going back or continuing onto the narrow ledge in front of them.

"What are we running from?" Icestar asked.

"Sharptooth," Meltingpaw saw the confused look on Icestar's face and added, "A huge mountain lion. Come on, we've got to go forward."

Meltingpaw ran out onto the ledge, then slipped and fell off the ledge. Icestar leaped out to catch him, then he to fell off the ledge and into the darkness.
