Chapter 1

I woke to find my mother, Spottedclaw, prodding my sister, Dawnkit, Who felt as cold as ice.

"Wake up, oh, please wake up!" she said.

My father, Fuzzyears, came in. "Spottedclaw, I'm sorry to say she's dead. She isn't going to wake up."

You could see the grief in his eyes as we heard: "Fuzzyears, time to sort out patrols."

"I wish I could stay. But Flowerstar wants me. Goodbye, Dawnkit."

"Oh, Dawnkit, What did I do to deserve this?" my Mother said.

"It's not your fault, Mommy" I said

"Oh, maybe if I realized she was coughing more last night..." Spottedclaw said

"You're being too hard on yourself." said Bluedawn, Who was another queen.

"I know, But maybe..." said my mother.
