Prologue[]

Lightning crackled, and rain thundered down. The once quiet stream was now a surging river, overflowing with water from the storm. Debris were easily swept up in it, and carried by the strong currents… Debris including a shadowy silhouette of a large, long-haired cat struggling against the force of the river. Currents shoved them under, thrust them back above, and slammed them into sharp rocks and logs. Paws flailed as the cat desperately tried to survive.

Suddenly, they were pushed right onto a small log, and they clung to it with all their might. Seeing a chance to get back on land, they stirred up the last of their energy, and leaped onto the shore. Panting, they lay down on the ground, rain still battering their muzzle, and their sides heaving as they began to breathe. They knew their chance at survival was slim, but they would still try. I have to try. For FrostClan. I have to stay alive.

They stared up at the dark sky, watching as it occasionally lit up with light. Are you up there, Starblaze? Have you come to take me away? However, no spirits came, and a smile crept across the cat’s face. They could still defend their clan. It wasn’t their time yet.

“I’ll be back soon, Frozenpaw. Don’t worry. I’ll come back to you,” they whispered. They thought of all the cats they loved, relieved and glad to see her back in FrostClan camp. They imagined their warm nest, waiting for them back in their den. As their mind filled with hopeful thoughts and pictures, their breaths became stronger and steadier.

Suddenly, a large paw slammed down on their side, knocking the breath back out of them. Weak and still recovering from nearly drowning, they could only shiver as the cold wind blew, and waves of searing pain hit them. Their opponent sank their claws further into their fur, and as they planted another paw down on their neck.

“Stop! Show me who you are!” they yowled desperately.

“I’m afraid not,” was the only reply, before they bit down on their neck, and everything went black. No… How could I let this happen…

“We’re trapped!” yowled Shineflower. During the storm, the tunnel to the nursery had collapsed and trapped all the queens inside. Plus, if the tunnel wasn’t stable, Shineflower wasn’t sure the actual nursery was, either. It was only a matter of time before it collapsed on the queens. She tensed at the thought. She would do anything to protect her unborn kits, but… if the nursery caved in, she wouldn’t be able to save them, or herself.

“Do you think the warriors will dig us out?” Palesky asked worriedly. Shineflower glance at where the tunnel used to be, and hoped that on the other side, Badgerface, her mate, was coming to save them. The other queens and I are too tired to dig, ourselves, so-

A huge spasm of pain shook Shineflower, and she collapsed onto her side, teeth clenched from the pain. Another wave hit her, and she screeched in agony.

“Your kits are coming!” exclaimed Skyshade. “And we don’t have a medicine cat with us! Oh, Starblaze, what are we to do?” No one responded. Shineflower opened her mouth again to scream, but nothing came out. Just more unbearable pain. Finally Palesky meowed “Alright. When I was younger, I used to want to be a medicine cat. I- I think I know what to do,” Shineflower felt a bit relieved, but then a colossal wave of pain hit her, and she scrunched her eyes shut.

“Two wonderful she-kits!” Palesky announced. Shineflower gazed at her kits lovingly. The bigger one was white and blue-gray, and the smaller one was fluffy and black with pale gray spots.

“I’m naming the larger one Snowkit, and the other one Cloudykit,” Shineflower meowed, her voice full of pride. Badgerface will be so happy to see his wonderful kits! Then, debris rained onto Shineflower’s head, and when she looked up, she saw huge cracks forming in the nursery ceiling. She curled her tail around her kits defensively, but there was no point. If the nursery- No. She wasn’t thinking about that. She would only believe the best.
